Communication and the thing we forget

Communication

You must be wondering that this seems to be a very easy topic. I communicate daily, rather I am really good at it. But we forget one major thing. So, what exactly is communication? Let’s find out.

We all communicate daily, be it with our family or our peers or with people we meet we come across daily for various reasons. It could be in a formal setting or informal setting. So is this it? this is communication? The ability to have a conversation with people we meet?

No!

More often than not, we tend to forget that communication is a two-way street. Listening and talking. If we only talk and not listen, or only listen and not talk, I don’t think we are doing a good job at “communication”.

I don’t want to get into the topic of how do we communicate better, no!
There are many ways to do it which one can find across various social media or read books related to it.

I just want to draw your attention to the basic thing we miss while communicating with others: we forget to listen. When we don’t listen, we don’t understand, when we don’t understand it can lead to confusion, miscommunication, disagreement, or even a fight.
So, LISTEN!

And many times, we listen to reply, not to understand. We listen to a few words, then assume what the person might say, immediately stop listening, and start forming a reply in our mind. Don’t we do it?

You must have heard this quote ” People listen to reply not to understand” Are we those people?

So listen to understand. that way, we can avoid a lot of fuss created because we fail to listen, understand, or both.

To summarize,I just hope that we :
1. Listen.
2. Listen to understand.

Few Extra things we can keep in mind while communicating :
1. Be polite.
2. Take a pause and think before you say anything.
3. Choose your words carefully.

I will leave you with this beautiful quote that I found ” You have two ears and one mouth, so speak less and listen more”
